about
One day I was driving in the city, coming out of a parking lot onto the street. A truck was trying to turn in and we ended up having a very heated verbal exchange. I had my son, who was around 15, with me. After our argument, I found myself feeling more and more uneasy and ashamed of my behaviour. When we got home, I apologized to my son and I sat down and wrote this song, realizing that I also needed forgiveness, and that the words we say, have consequences, even if we don't always know what they are. We need to guard our tongues, and allow the Spirit to give us words of love, kindness and compassion.
lyrics
1. Met a man on the street today.
Can't believe the things I said to him.
All the anger bottled up inside came rolling off my tongue.
What I'd give to take the whole thing back,
Turn the clock, and do it all again.
And it kills me that I'll never know the pain I left behind.
What I held in my hand was a hard, cold stone.
I can't take back what I've thrown.
Chorus: So Father forgive me.
I don't know why you love me.
When I look in my soul I see,
Heaven's a long walk home for me.
2. Sometimes when I open up my mouth.
All this garbage keeps on falling out of it.
I just don't know what to do with all the anger in my heart.
Let it go, or let the whole thing slide?
I don't know, could I really be that cool?
If the world calls conscience foolishness,
Then I'd rather be a fool.
What I held in my hand was a hard, cold stone.
I can't take back what I've thrown.
Chorus: So Father forgive me.
I don't know how you love me.
When I look in my soul I see,
Heaven's a long walk home for me.
Ev'ry word leaves a mark,
For good or evil given.
All the things I do on earth
Are stored up there in heaven.
When I stand there with this stone
Held tightly in my hand,
I hope I'll understand, please help me understand,
That the very stone I threw, I really threw at you.
What I held in my hand was a hard, cold stone.
I can't take back what I've thrown.
Chorus: Father forgive me.
I just want to be worthy.
When I look in my soul I hope you'll see.
Heaven's not all that far for me.
When I look in my soul I hope you'll see.
Heaven's not all that far for me.
