about

In Saskatchewan we have some native sparrows. The white-throated sparrow has a very distinctive song. They sing an almost pitch perfect A minor chord. I have heard them singing their melancholy song from the top of the poplar trees in my yard. To sing with the birds was a rare treasure and a blessing in this Celtic style folk tune melded with the traditional hymn "This is My Father's World."

lyrics

1. A white-throated sparrow in a tall poplar tree.
Singing to the sky, a mournful lullaby.
And I on the ground, with the earth below my feet,
Could never sing so true, or sound as sweet.

Chorus: This is my Father's world, and to my list'ning ears,
All nature sings, and round me rings, the music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world. I rest me in the thought,
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--
His hand the wonders wrought.

2. If I could put sound to the music in my soul,
There could never be a sweeter song for me,
Than this simple joyful tune, this playful melody.
A hymn of praise for you, a prayer for me.

Chorus: This is my Father's world. The birds their carols raise.
The morning bright, the lily white, declare their maker's praise.
This is my Father's world, he shines in all that's fair.
In the rustling grass, I hear him pass.
He speaks to me everywhere.

3. Little sparrow sing me your song.
Ev'ry not clear and strong.
I lift my voice and I'll sing along,
The music of the spheres.
Sing praise to our God for sun, and rain, and life, and food,
For rocks, trees, for skies and seas.
His hand the wonders wrought.
His hand the wonders wrought.
