In 1991 my husband, our two year old son and I went to Bangladesh to serve with MCC (Mennonite Central Committee.) I had been to Asia before, but never had I experienced poverty like I did in Bangladesh. There were so many beggars, a good portion of them children. What surprised me was the joy they often expressed despite their poor conditions. It touched my heart in a way that is difficult to express.

1. Beggar child you stand upon my street,'
Holding out your hand, "Give me something to eat!"
And if I talk with you awhile, then you smile.
How can you smile?

Chorus: For I am a beggar too.
Oh Lord, can I beg from you,
Compassion for this beggar child I see,
And forgiveness for me.

2. Beggar child I see you in my mind.
Calling out to me, "I am poor. I am blind!"
And if I listen to your plea,
Will I see? What will I see?

Out of the dirt, out of your poverty,
So freely giving of your joy of life to me.

3. Beggar child you reach into my heart,

And surely as I learn to walk with you,
